Most of what you see on Gaylin Howbert's website was shot on film, and the rainbow shots are 35mm, not a Photoshop trick. She shoots digital alongside it and keeps sessions relaxed, watching for the quiet in-between moments. She has never liked being in front of a camera herself, so she knows how awkward it can feel, and there are dad jokes to help.
Jenny Vargas taught herself photography after her son was born. She wanted to be home for every milestone, so she photographed him constantly until she had the camera, the editing and the island light worked out. She grew up in California, came to Maui with her husband, and now works with two associates, Lexi and Meigan.
Adam and Shawn Ravazzano, husband and wife, started Love & Water in Wailea in 2014 as a two-person operation, and it has grown into a small team covering South and West Maui, Oahu and the Big Island.
Surprise engagements are Tad Craig's favorite thing to photograph, because the person being asked realizes in an instant that their life has just changed. His photography started with a Nikon FE2, a high school graduation present back home in Telluride, Colorado. Maui became his base, and over two decades he has shot well over a thousand weddings, elopements and events.
