These terms cover your use of HowIGotEngaged.com ("we", "us"). By using the site, or by sending us a story, a ring, a listing or anything else, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the site. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and how we use it, and is part of these terms.
Who can use the site
The site is not directed at children under 13. To submit a story, add a ring, list or claim a business, or create an account, you must be at least 18.
What you share with us
You keep ownership of the stories, photos and other material you send us ("your content"). You give us permission to use it, as follows.
The permission you give us. You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, display, reproduce and publish your content on HowIGotEngaged.com and on our own social media accounts, and to adapt it for those places: for example, cropping or resizing a photo, setting your words over your photo in a video or share image, or quoting part of your story. We publish your words as you wrote them; we may shorten or excerpt them, but we don't rewrite what you said. This licence lets us show your content in connection with the site and its promotion. It does not let us sell your content or license it to anyone else.
How long it lasts. The licence lasts until you ask us to remove your content. When you do, we take it off the site and delete our own social posts that feature it, within 30 days. We can't recall copies other people have already shared or saved, or copies kept in routine backups for a short time.
What you promise us. When you send us content, you confirm that:
- it's yours to share, or you have permission from whoever owns it. If a professional photographer took a photo, check with them first: the rights are usually theirs, and we credit the photographer you name;
- anyone recognisable in your photos is happy for them to be published;
- what you tell us is true to the best of your knowledge; and
- it doesn't break the law or anyone's rights.
Handles and names. If you give us your social media handles, we show them on your entry as links to your profiles. Your email address is never published.
We decide what gets published. We read submissions by hand and may decline, edit for length or formatting, or remove anything at our discretion, including content that breaks these terms.
The ring register
Entries are numbered in the order they're published. Adding a ring lets us show it on the register and post it on our own social accounts, as the form says. We remove the location and camera details your phone attaches to a photo. A ring's maker, as you name it, is shown as you entered it; it is not an endorsement by that brand.
Vendor listings
Listings we write. We research proposal specialists and write listings from publicly available information, such as the business's own website and press coverage. We work to keep them accurate, but businesses change their prices, services and details, so please confirm anything important with the vendor directly.
Listing or claiming your business. Listing a business, or claiming one we've written up, is free, and we take no commission on bookings. We verify claims by hand. Once verified, the account we set up for you is what ties the listing to you, and you may edit it. You're responsible for keeping your listing accurate and for having the rights to every photo you add. If you'd rather not be listed, tell us through the claim form and we'll take the listing down.
We may edit, decline or remove any listing, including a claimed one, for example if it's inaccurate, misleading or breaks these terms.
No endorsement. A listing, a badge or a mention in a guide is not a recommendation or guarantee of a vendor's work. Any booking is an agreement between you and the vendor; we aren't a party to it and aren't responsible for it.
Badges. Listed vendors may display the badge we provide, linked to their listing, while they're listed. Please don't alter it or use our name or logo in any other way without asking.
Accounts
You're responsible for keeping your password safe and for what happens under your account. If you sign in with Google, Google's terms also apply to that sign-in. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.
Things you may not do
- post anything you don't have the right to share, or that's unlawful, hateful, harassing, sexually explicit or misleading;
- pretend to be someone else, or claim a business that isn't yours;
- send spam or promotional material through our forms;
- copy the site's content in bulk, or use automated tools to collect it, other than normal search engine indexing; or
- try to get around our security, spam protection or access controls, or interfere with the site's operation.
Our content
Apart from content our users and vendors send us, the site's text, guides, design and graphics belong to us or are used with permission. Photos from other sources are credited to their owners and remain theirs. You're welcome to read, share links to and save our pages for your own personal use. Please don't republish our guides or articles elsewhere without permission.
Links, ads and other sites
The site links to vendor websites, social media and other sites we don't control, and we aren't responsible for them. Some pages carry advertising. Some links may earn us a commission if you buy something; where they do, we'll say so.
Removal requests and photo complaints
To remove your own story, ring entry or listing, or anything else that features you, email admin@howigotengaged.com.
If you believe something on the site uses your work without permission, for example your photo on someone's ring entry, email admin@howigotengaged.com with your name, the page it's on, and what you own. We'll look into it promptly and take it down if it shouldn't be there.
Disclaimers
The site, including our guides, is provided "as is". Venues close, prices change and rules about where you can propose change too, so check details before you rely on them. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, express or implied, about the site or anything on it.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from your use of the site, from content other people post, or from your dealings with any vendor. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to US$100.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the site changes. The date at the top shows when they last changed. If you keep using the site after a change, the updated terms apply.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the state in which HowIGotEngaged.com operates, and any dispute will be handled by the courts of that state, unless the law where you live says otherwise.
