Best Places to Propose in Vienna

As the capital of Austria, Vienna is a fantastic choice for a proposal vacation because of its beautiful architecture and its rich and romantic heritage. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Vienna was known as the cultural center of Europe and as the home of Mozart, Strauss, Brahms, and Beethoven, as well as the birthplace of the waltz.

There are endless places to propose in and around Vienna. On a clear day look for a tall building or hill with a lovely view over the city and surrounding areas. For something different choose a proposal that has a unique Viennese twist, or if you’d like a secluded outdoor proposal check out the many landscaped parks and gardens in the area.

For a fantastic view of Vienna you could consider proposing on the observation deck of the Donauturm, or Danube Tower. The deck is 150m from ground level and you can choose between an open air terrace and a glass room. After your proposal you could eat at the tower’s revolving restaurant.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral located on Stephansplatz in the Innere Stadt, or city center, is an impressive thirteenth century gothic structure with a beautiful latticework spire that dominates the city. You can choose to take the elevator up the north tower or climb the stairs to the south tower, both of which offer stunning views over Vienna.

If you’re feeling energetic a hike up Kahlenberg, a mountain located in the Vienna Woods, offers a superb view out over the whole city and surrounding areas. Propose at the Stefaniewarte, a viewing tower at the top (it is not open all year, so check before you go), and then grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants on the summit. The mountain is also accessible by road.

The old fashioned giant Riesenrad ferris wheel at the Prater amusement park was built in the late nineteenth century and offers beautiful views as well as a little privacy if you can get a car to yourselves. After your proposal enjoy wandering around the park admiring the sculptures on Rondeau and Calafatti Platz.

For a unique sightseeing experience in Vienna why not book a fiaker, or horse drawn carriage tour of the old town? These carriages were a main method of transport in Vienna in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and there are still around one hundred in use in the city. A fiaker would be perfect for a romantic proposal.

Ice skating is a popular pastime in Vienna in the winter and there are plenty of outdoor locations where you can skate hand in hand before you propose. When the old Danube freezes many people skate there, but you may feel safer gliding across the ice at the Wiener Eistraum, the rink that covers Rathausplatz in front of the city hall every winter.

For a true taste of Vienna, book tickets to an opera at the world renowned Wiener Staatsoper, or state opera house. Take a tour of the opera house and propose in the Tea Salon before you take your seats to watch a romantic performance. The annual opera ball would be a fantastic place to propose if you can get tickets.
