Halloween Proposal Ideas: Real Proposals That Worked

Halloween is the most underrated night of the year to propose, and I'd argue it's the easiest to pull off. Think about why proposals get rumbled. She notices the nerves, the strange plan, the friend who suddenly needs everyone outside at a very particular moment. Halloween gives you a cover story for all of it, because she's expecting a scare or a costume or a carving contest, and nobody expects a ring in the middle of a carving contest.

Every Halloween proposal idea below really happened, and most of them were reported in the local press. Pick the one that sounds like her.

Pumpkin proposals: the best cover story

The best one we know of is on this site. In Halloween Handywork, Stacie had been angling for a pumpkin carving contest for a while, and James finally agreed. He insisted on carving templates and separate stations so neither could see the other's work. She went first. Her jack-o'-lantern was a face and a hanging bat at the same time, and she asked whether he was nervous. A little, he admitted. Then he asked her to turn around, and when she turned back he was on one knee, with his pumpkin flickering a short distance behind him and the question carved into it.

What makes it work is that the contest gives you a reason to carve in secret and you control the moment she sees it. You can strip the idea right down. One couple on the Weddingbee forums had four jack-o'-lanterns on the front lawn, turned around one at a time to spell out the question. Or go big, the way Levi did in Cleveland, carving more than a dozen pumpkins over four and a half hours while Leah's sister kept her out at dinner.

Not a carver? At the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze in the Hudson Valley, the organizers made Jonathan a pumpkin based on a photo of the couple's shadows holding hands, with Jenna's name on it. And on a farm in British Columbia, Jesse had pumpkins laid out across a field to read "Justine, will you marry me?" before taking her up in a small plane to see it from the air.

If you're carving the question yourself, keep it short and the letters big. "Marry me?" reads from across a porch, and a long sentence in a pretty font won't. You don't have to cut all the way through either. Most of the letters on James's pumpkin were shaved back to the pale flesh, and they still read clearly in the photo. Carve it on the day or the night before, since a cut pumpkin goes soft fast, and look at it lit, in the dark, from where she'll actually be standing.

And make sure she sees it. In the Halloween Pumpkin Surprise video, Douglas proposed mid-carving and Michelle missed the ring at first, even with him trying to point it out.

Haunted house proposals, if she loves a scare

Only do this if she loves being scared. You know whether she's the one who drags everyone to the scare attraction every October or the one who waits in the car.

Logan Schildhouse is the proof that you don't have to love it yourself. "I'm a scaredy cat, and I would never ever think of doing something like this," he told News 5 Cleveland. But haunted houses are Kait's thing, so he worked with the staff at the Bloodview Haunted House in Ohio to get himself placed inside the attraction, in fake blood, and stepped out as she came through. She had no idea.

Getting the staff involved is the whole trick. Kevin planned his with the creators of Blind Scream in California well in advance, and an actor handed Catherine the ring out of a cabinet. She thought he was "showing me a secret room that we were going to go through," she told ABC7. In New Jersey, Angelo didn't need to arrange anything with the staff. He was one of them, and he proposed to Brittany in the middle of his scene at the Haunted Scarehouse.

It doesn't always go to plan. At the 13th Floor in Phoenix, Bryanna got so frightened of the zombie actors in the graveyard room that she ran and fell off the stage. "Very surprised, especially since I fell off the stage. It was amazing," she told Fox 10. She wasn't hurt, and she said yes. Still, ask the attraction to ease off the scares in the room where you're proposing, and choose a spot where she'll be standing still.

The theme parks are an option too. At Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood, Manuel had his wife Sofia's favourite horror character bring her to the middle of a stage, where he re-proposed with their original wedding ring. They'd eloped years earlier and she'd never had the big proposal (NBC Los Angeles). We couldn't find a published proposal policy for Universal's or Disney's Halloween events, so call guest services before you buy tickets, and ask whether a member of staff can hold the ring and someone can film.

Corn mazes, trick-or-treating and costume proposals

A corn maze has a private spot at every dead end. Joshua proposed to Hunter in the Cooper Farm maze in Pennsylvania with friends and family filming, and afterwards the whole group got lost trying to find the exit.

For trick-or-treating you need a neighbour who goes all out. In Tulsa, Michael dropped the ring off with a couple who turn their house into a haunt every year, and when he and Alexis came to the door in costume they handed him the ring box instead of candy.

Costumes give you a reason to stop for a photo. Kolby, dressed as the Beast, asked for a second alone with Hope before the pictures and proposed to his Belle. Scott, as Popeye, went down on one knee to Heidi in the middle of a live TV interview at the Village Halloween Parade in New York. And in South Pasadena, Katherine was touring locations from the film Halloween when Alec jumped out of the famous hedge dressed as Michael Myers.

If she doesn't care for Halloween at all, it can just be the date. Jason proposed to Clare in a London hotel room on a quiet Sunday morning, and they only realised later that it was the 31st of October. Nobody forgets an anniversary on Halloween.
