Claire Whelpton started Surprise Proposals in 2013, when proposal planning was barely heard of in Australia, and the media attention that followed had her taking bookings off radio and TV. More than 1,400 proposals later, she still plans every one herself, from the first idea to the night itself, with no handover to a coordinator. She counts the night a success when your partner is in tears by the end.
The styled packages carry names like Fairy Light Fantasy and Floral Fantasy, and Claire has it all set before you arrive. Settings run from parks on Sydney Harbour with no venue fee to a castle in Manly, hotel suites and a private rooftop whose address she keeps quiet. Her soft spot is the Shangri-La's Horizon Club rooms, the ones with the blue carpet. If you want a photographer, a musician or fireworks, she books people she has worked with for years.
