Gianfranco Catullo came out of photojournalism and has photographed in Rome for more than 20 years. He calls his own work a blend of fine art and reportage. He built his name on the surprise proposal, claiming to be the first in the city to treat it as a real photographic genre rather than a snapshot, and he stays out of sight until the yes lands. His aim is to perceive the emotion of the day, not manufacture a pose. He shoots proposals at Pincio Terrace, Villa Borghese, the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum, and travels to Venice for couples who want Piazza San Marco.
